DG834GT
Custom firmware for DG834GT
DGTeam
Firmware
DG834GT_V1.02.16_DGTeam_0848
(now obsolete)
I've
used v0848 of this firmware for a few month with good results. It's
based on netgrears firmware V1.02.16 with many added features, the best
being the ability to set your own target noise margin.
A couple of minor problem I've found with this firmware.
1) If the routers
firewall is set to block IM (instant messaging) ports then this also
stops large email attachments from being sent. Haven't tested this with
Netgears firmware V1.02.16 but it may be the same bug exists with that.
2) The log showed frequent NTP queries (time sync).
DG834GT
- 1.03.22 DGTeam REV. 1014
This has fixed the block IM firewall issue.
There's a choice of three images, each with a different ADSL driver.
adsldrv022c -- oldest driver, still used in Netgear's own firmware
adsldrv023b
adsldrv023o -- newest driver, with impulse noise protection (PhyRe)
setting.
I've tested all three on my long line, there was no noticeable
difference in performance.
New features include:-
1) Dynamic DNS -- A number of pre-set service providers including
OpenDNS.
2) Custom Setup -- Allows running a custom script at system events or
at set times.
I use this to reboot the router each morning at 8:57am. Useful if the
router has a re sync, to a lower speed, during the night.
ie in "Cron table script" enter the following script:
57 8 * * * root /sbin/reboot
See DGTeam's forum for more
information on custom scripts.
3) Wake on Lan. No need to remember the MAC address, they are all show
on the page displayed by the router.
GaTi
Firmware
GaTi V0.6 Beta1, based on Netgears firmware
V1.02.19 again with many extra features. So far I've found no problems
sending email attachments with or without IM ports blocked. Time syncs
are a more reasonable one per day.
Netgear's
Firmware
V
1.02.19
This gave me problems with DHCP. Sometimes when starting a computer it
would be given the wrong IP address and the computer would not be able
to see the network. Manually setting the IP, Subnet and Gateway
addresses in the computer fixed this issue but this should not have
been necessary.
Never had this issue using the above GaTi firmware although it is based
on Netgear's v 1.02.19.
V 1.03.22 Not tried this
firmware.
V 1.03.23 Not tried this
firmware.
2Wire BT2700HGV
This was my preferred router for ADSL (up to 8 Meg) connecting to a
dslam using a Texas Instruments chipset.
Since
moving to a different supplier offering ADSL2+ with a dslam using a
Broadcom chipset I find the Speedtouch 858v7 and Netgear DG845GT gives
slightly better result.
This router however gave me the best wireless signal of any other I've
tried.
Speedtouch TG585 v7
This gave me good sync speed but did suffer from occasional re-boot's,
suspected to be due to over heating.
Poor wireless signal.
D-Link DSL-G624T
Worst connection speed of any router I've tried on my line.
Wireless signal was OK.
Thomson TG587n v2
Good connection speed on my long line. Good wireless signal throughout
the house at 130 Mbps.
Only thing I can fault is the dreadful user interface.
Learning a few control line
interface commands ( cli commands ) issued by
telnet is essential.
